Our little newsletter

Hello Everyone,

As I sit here typing to you, I have music playing in the background. I’ve changed my “tune” over the years as far as music goes. I used to have the local radio station playing. Then one day I brought in a CD that I had received for Christmas. It wasn’t what I had asked for but I kept it. After all, it was the songs I had heard growing up. Some of my favorites were As time Goes By, Blue Moon, and My Funny Valentine. One day last week I had a male customer come in whose a retired music teacher. He was humming and swaying to the music and commented on my selection. I said this is what I heard growing up and I can’t believe I’m playing it today. He then said to me.

“What you are now is what you were then”. Meaning what you heard when you were 10-12yrs of age is what you come back to later in life. I found that interesting.

When I go over to visit my Dad he’s usually playing Big Band music. He usually pulls me up to dance with him. I used to roll my eyes, but, now I find it endearing to see him enjoying it. Since my Mother passed away he’s accumulated quite a collection. I thought about it the other day. My sisters and I had taken turns picking out pieces of her jewelry. When it was my turn I would pass. After we were all done I said there is only one thing I want, her crochet books, yarn and supplies. They said you can have that. After some time I was able to go through her things and it was then I discovered that I was meant to have it. My name was throughout those books on things that she knew I would like.

That brings me back to my Dad. When that day comes around and I’m standing at the greasy work bench with my brothers. I’ll pass when it’s my turn to pick out greasy stuff. Then when it’s over I will say. There is only one thing that I want. I want his Big Band and Nat King Cole collection. And they’ll say, you can have it.

After all, they have never danced to “Unforgetable” like I have. If there is one thing I’ve learned in life it's that it is too darn short. So stop to listen to the music. You just might remember a tune or two.
